It is a common belief in many parts of the world that water is an infinite resource to exploit as needed, but as the saying goes, "you don’t know the value of water until the well is running dry." This is especially true in arid parts of the U.S. where most of the municipal water comes from overstressed underground aquifers. Whereas rainwater is considered a renewable natural resource, many aquifers are being "mined," that is, communities are drawing out more water than the aquifer naturally receives to recharge it.
As drought and aquifer mining begin to call attention to an increasing water crisis, people are seeking ways minimize impact on their municipal water supplies. Rain barrels can be part of the solution. Just look outside your window the next time it rains and imagine all the water that’s running down your driveway being put to beneficial use in your home and garden!
Rain barrels offer rural and city dwellers perhaps the best opportunity to make the most of one of nature's best bargains - pure, soft, rain water. A rain barrel is a system designed to collect and store the rain water from your roof which is normally diverted to storm drains, lost to evaporation, or restricted to the immediate ground area under your downspout. We never use chemical drums or barrels. We use only food storage barrels that have been gently cleaned. You may still discover the scent of olives or peppers when you first receive your barrel.
How it works
The most basic rain barrel setup requires a storage tank (rain barrel), a secure lid, a basket strainer or screen, and a spigot or drain valve. Water flows off of the roof into the gutter, then enters the downspout and pours through the basket strainer attached to the lid of the water barrel. Collected rainwater can then be retrieved directly from the spigot at the bottom of the rain water barrel, or a garden hose can be attached by which the water can be directed to the desired location. Rain barrels are highly effective. During a normal rainfall season, an average-size roof may harvest up to 2,000 gallons of water.
Because our rain barrels had an active previous life shipping and storing food products from the Mediterranean they have various scratches and other cosmetic blemishes that give each one unique character and charm. We think you'll agree that the rugged appearance of our rain barrels is proof of their durability.
